Three Lions Coach Reveals His Approach: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.

Ten years back, Anthony Barry featured in League Two. Currently, he is focused supporting the head coach claim the World Cup trophy in 2026. His path from the pitch to the sidelines commenced with a voluntary role for Accrington's Under-16s. He remembers, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” and he fell in love with it. He realized his purpose.

Staggering Ascent

Barry's progression stands out. Starting as Paul Cook’s assistant, he built a name with creative training and strong interpersonal abilities. His club career included elite sides, plus he took on coaching jobs abroad with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He has worked with legends including top footballers. Now, with England, it’s full-time, the “pinnacle” in his words.

“Everything starts with a dream … Yet I'm convinced that obsession can move mountains. You envision the goal then you break it down: ‘How do we do it, gradually?’ We aim for World Cup victory. But dreams won’t get it done. We must create a structured plan enabling us to maximize our opportunities.”

Obsession with Details

Dedication, particularly on fine points, is central to his philosophy. Putting in long hours day and night, the coaching duo test boundaries. Their strategies involve psychological profiling, a plan for hot conditions for the finals abroad, and building a true team. The coach highlights “Team England” and avoids language including "pause".

“This isn't a vacation or a rest,” he explains. “It was vital to establish a setup that attracts the squad and, secondly, they feel so stretched that it’s a breather.”

Greedy Coaches

Barry describes himself along with the manager as “very greedy”. “We aim to control each element of play,” Barry affirms. “We seek to command the whole ground and we dedicate many of our days on. Our responsibility not only to stay ahead with developments but to beat them and create our own ones. This is continuous focused on finding solutions. And to simplify complexity.

“We have 50 days with the players before the World Cup finals. We must implement a complex game that gives us a tactical advantage and explain it thoroughly in our 50 days with them. We need to progress from idea to information to knowledge to execution.

“To develop a process for effective use during the limited time, we have to use the whole 500 we’ll have had since we took the job. In the time we don’t have the players, we need to foster connections with each player. We must dedicate moments in calls with players, we need to watch them play, sense their presence. Relying only on those 50 days, we won't succeed.”

Upcoming Matches

He is getting ready for the final pair in the qualifying campaign – against Serbia at Wembley and in Albania. England have guaranteed qualification after six consecutive victories without conceding a goal. Yet, no let-up is planned; on the contrary. Now is the moment to strengthen the squad's character, for further momentum.

“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that the style of play should represent everything that is good about the Premier League,” Barry says. “The fitness, the adaptability, the strength, the honesty. The Three Lions kit must be difficult to earn but light to wear. It ought to be like a superhero's cape not protective gear.

“For it to feel easy, we have to give them a style that allows them to play freely like they do every week, that feels natural and encourages attacking play. They must be stuck less in thinking and focus more on action.

“There are emotional wins for managers in attack and defense – building from the defense, closing down early. But in the middle area on the field, that section, we believe play has stagnated, notably in domestic leagues. Coaches have extensive data these days. They know how to set up – defensive shapes. Our aim is to speed up play in that central area.”

Passion for Progress

The coach's thirst to get better is all-consuming. While training for the top coaching badge, he felt anxious about the presentation, especially as his class featured big names like Lampard and Carrick. To enhance his abilities, he entered the most challenging environments imaginable to hone his presentations. One was HMP Walton in his home city of Liverpool, and he trained detainees during an exercise.

He earned his license as the best in his year, and his research paper – focusing on set-pieces, for which he analysed thousands of throw-ins – was published. Frank was one of those convinced and he brought Barry on to his staff at Chelsea. When Lampard was sacked, it was telling that the club got rid of nearly all assistants except Barry.

Lampard’s successor with the club took over, within months, he and Barry won the Champions League. When Tuchel was dismissed, Barry remained with Potter. However, when Tuchel returned in Germany, he recruited Barry from Chelsea and back alongside him. English football's governing body see them as a double act similar to Southgate and Holland.
