The United Kingdom, United Nations, and European Union Condemn a ‘Gross Injustice’ of Pro-Democracy Activist Jimmy Lai’s Two-Decade Jail Sentence.

The sentencing of pro-democracy activist , a UK passport holder Jimmy Lai to a lengthy prison term in Hong Kong has sparked international condemnation. Rights groups and multiple governments have called the security-related charges driven by politics.

International Outcry and Calls for Release

The United Kingdom's foreign affairs chief Yvette Cooper remarked that the 20-year term is effectively a de facto life term for the elderly man. She labeled the trial as being driven by political motives under a law designed to silence those who speak out against China. She urged Hong Kong's authorities to terminate his suffering and free him to his family.

“This ruling demonstrates how the vague and overly broad clauses of Hong Kong’s legal framework may be enforced in violation of global human rights commitments,” said the UN rights chief Volker Türk.

A European bloc official, Anitta Hipper, remarked that Brussels “condemns” the result of the lengthy trial and pushed for his immediate and unconditional release.

Context of the Prosecution

Jimmy Lai, the founder of the now-shuttered Apple Daily tabloid, was taken into custody four years ago the introduction of a controversial national security law in Hong Kong. The law was introduced by Chinese authorities following months of pro-democracy protests which Lai and his newspaper supported.

He was ultimately convicted on allegations encompassing conspiracy to produce seditious material and plotting to collaborate with external actors. The collusion allegations were brought under the national security statute.

Personal Fears

Lai’s son, Sebastien, expressed that his father fears dying alone apart from his relatives. His international counsel labeled him the “globally most notable political prisoner” currently incarcerated.

Sebastien Lai said that while the sentence was expected, its reality was harsher than imagined, yet it provided some “relief” that the judicial farce had concluded.

Diplomatic Fallout

The sentencing has influenced the bilateral relationship. The UK's head of government Keir Starmer said he discussed Lai’s case in a conversation with China's leader Xi Jinping earlier this year. However, the extent of progress in securing his freedom is not known.

Sebastien Lai queried the value of a visa-free travel agreement announced recently, stating it felt “a bit tone deaf.”

Government Reactions

Conversely, the Hong Kong and Chinese authorities welcomed the court's decision. Hong Kong’s top official John Lee stated the verdict showed that “the rule of law is upheld.”

An official representing China’s diplomatic corps, Lin Jian, described Lai as the “primary instigator” behind past unrest and asserted the trial had been “justified and legal.” He called on foreign countries to refrain from intervention in the nation's domestic matters.

A Symbolic Case

Press rights groups called Lai as a symbol of eroding press liberties in Hong Kong. The organization's director general remarked it was a “somber occasion for those who cherish a free press.”

Boasting a close to 100% success rate in prosecuting security-related crimes, Lai’s severe sentence is regarded as the strictest yet delivered under the disputed law.
