The Red Devils Poised to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants

The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from Bayern Munich.

A Marquee Signing for the WSL Side

Schüller, who has six months left on her deal, is known as a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. Having scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. This signing is viewed as a major coup for the Women’s Super League side.

Her exit from Munich has been anticipated since she appeared to be fighting back tears while applauding the club's fans following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading forwards. Per reports, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.

Reliable Goalscoring to Strengthen the Attack

The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a significant uplift to the team's forward line. Schüller has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.

  • For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the last term, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She won the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Building Momentum at Old Trafford

Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when the club appear to be building momentum.

Recent performances include qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen additional business:

  1. The signing of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The new deal for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since arriving in 2023.

Regarding Miyazawa’s extension, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a vital part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”

The new defender, having arrived from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
