New Year's Celebrants Told to Bundle Up with Wintry Weather Expected Throughout the UK
Weather experts are saying a chilly beginning to the new year, with snowfall expected throughout a lot of the UK. Revelers are being urged to dress warmly as near-freezing temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.
Celebratory Plans Proceed Despite Warnings
The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay events are expected to go ahead, unlike last year's cancellation. This comes despite weather alerts for snow across northern Scotland.
"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so extra layers will be needed," said the national forecaster.
Celebrations Under Mostly Clear but Cold Skies
Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is expected to be ideal for fireworks displays, with a lack of precipitation and open skies. Temperatures are forecast to be cold, meaning warm wraps essential, according to forecasters.
Further north, skies will be more overcast, but this is not expected to affect visibility for watching fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.
Broad Snow Warnings for New Year's Day
As we enter Friday, snow alerts have been issued for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and the majority of the south-east of England.

- Travelers are advised to plan for delays for travel on the road.
- Hold-ups and call-offs are expected on trains and buses.
Temperatures Set to Fall Further
With the start of 2026, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are expected to plummet as snowfall and high winds are likely to hit the north of the country.
Approximately 10cm of snow is expected to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.
Health Warnings Activated
Meanwhile, serious cold weather health warnings have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to continue until noon on 5 January, with the mercury expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.
The health agency stated this signified the weather was likely to trigger major effects across health and social care services. This involves a potential rise in the fatality numbers among the elderly or unwell or those 65 and older.
The advice for all is clear: to see the new year in good health, wrapping up warm is utterly paramount.
