Gavin Newsom States He Is Weighing a 2028 Presidential Run

Gavin Newsom, a prominent Democratic figure, has disclosed that he will make a decision about whether to run for president in 2028 following the 2026 elections are over.

"Absolutely, it would be dishonest if I said no," the governor commented when questioned about giving serious thought to a presidential run post the 2026 midterms. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I can't do that."

The governor's tenure as California's leader concludes in early 2027, and he cannot run again. Yet, he noted that any determination is not imminent.

"Fate will determine that," he said.

Increased Visibility as a Political Adversary

Newsom has come to the forefront as a high-profile opponent of the former president's team, using his digital presence and advocating for a ballot measure that would increase the party's House seats in as a counter to GOP gerrymandering. This strategy has made him a target from critics.

Clash on Transportation

Donald Trump's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, accused that the governor shows no concern about Californians in a weekend segment on a major news network. The secretary revealed plans to cut government money from California and threatened suspending the power to issue CDLs.

"I plan to withdraw $160 million from the state," Duffy declared, after a recently reported tragic collision in the state involving an unauthorized semi truck driver that caused loss of life and four injuries.

The governor's team pointed out that the national authorities had approved the individual's authorization multiple times, which permitted him to receive a CDL under U.S. law.

Duffy had previously stated he was holding back $40 million from the state for not enforcing English language requirements for commercial drivers.

Firm Rebuttal from the Administration

"Former D-list reality star, now Secretary of Transportation, fails to grasp federal law," his administration said in a last month's comment responding to Duffy's threats. "Meanwhile, as opposed to this individual, we rely on data: The state's commercial driver's license holders had a fatal crash rate significantly lower than the national average. Texas – the single state with more commercial holders – has a rate almost 50% higher than the state. Data speaks for itself. The Trump administration does."

Public Opinion and Political Future

A recently conducted poll showed that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and almost half of voters indicated that Newsom ought to campaign for the White House in the next election cycle. Since Trump took office, his approval ratings has risen to an mean of 33.5% from approximately 30%, while his negative ratings has fallen from an typical level of previous highs to current figures.

Some time ago, Newsom remarked while visiting several swing states that he had "no idea" about his future for the next presidential election.

He noted his past difficulties, including being identified as dyslexic at the early childhood.

"The thought that a guy who got 960 on his SAT, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was always in the back of the classroom – the fact that this is even suggested is, alone, remarkable," he stated. "It's anyone's guess? I'm looking forward to who emerges in 2028 and who meets that moment. And that's the question for the voters."
