Experts Detect Kremlin Intimidation Strategy Against Tomahawk Deployment

Russian authorities is implementing a strategic manipulation campaign of threats to prevent the US from providing precision-guided weapons to Ukraine, according to defense experts. An influential Russian lawmaker declared: “We are familiar with these projectiles very well, their operational characteristics, defensive countermeasures, we tested against them in the Syrian conflict, so it presents no surprises. Those delivering them and those who use them will face consequences … We will develop strategies to hurt those who cause us trouble.”

Ukrainian Military Push Progress

Ukrainian forces were causing significant casualties in a strategic push in the Donetsk front, the central battlefield, the Ukrainian president stated on midweek. Zelenskyy's assessment, derived from a communication with his senior military officer, contradicted the Russian president's address to high-ranking military personnel a prior day in which he said Russian troops maintained the strategic initiative in every combat zone.

According to analysis from early October, conflict monitors said Russia was suffering significant losses, mainly because of unmanned aerial vehicle assaults, in compensation of small operational progress. Ukrainian forces, the president stated, were “maintaining our defense along all other directions”, mentioning particularly Kupiansk, a heavily damaged town in Ukraine's northeast under intense attacks for an extended period.

Regional Conditions

Local authorities in Ukraine's southern region of the Kherson oblast said Russian attacks on midweek caused three deaths in and around the urban center of Kherson city. Local authorities of Sumy region, on the northern border with neighboring Russia, said three fatalities occurred in unmanned aerial strikes in different districts. Ukraine's air force said it neutralized or disrupted most of the offensive unmanned aircraft during the night.

A Russian attack seriously damaged critical infrastructure, authorities said on Wednesday. Facility personnel were harmed during the strike, as reported by energy company officials. Officials offered minimal specifics, regarding the plant's location, but Ukrainian authorities said Russia struck power facilities in Ukraine's northern Chernihiv, southern Ukraine and the Dnipropetrovsk area.

Civilian Effects

In the north-eastern Sumy town of northeastern Ukraine, severely affected by the offensive operations against the energy infrastructure, local government has established temporary shelters where civilians are able to warm up, drink hot tea, maintain communication capability and access mental health services, according to local official.

Global Response

Kyiv's representative to Nato on Wednesday called on European partners to step up purchases of American military equipment for Kyiv. “This doesn't mean we favor American weapons instead of European or some other European weapons – the challenge remains that we are requesting the US for systems that EU members are unable to supply,” said the ambassador.

Federal law enforcement will immediately gain permission to shoot down unmanned aerial vehicles, security chief announced on Wednesday, after a spate of drone sightings believed to be Moscow's attempts to spy and intimidate. Presenting proposed legislation, the representative said security forces could legally “to take state-of-the-art technical action against UAV risks, such as EMP technology, electronic interference, satellite signal blocking, but also with direct interception”.

Regional Defense Concerns

EU chief said on midweek that EU nations need to strengthen its protective capabilities to deter complex threat operations in response to air incursions, computer network operations and marine communications interference. “These aren't isolated incidents. They constitute a coherent and escalating campaign,” the official said in a presentation to the European parliament. “A couple of events are coincidence, but multiple, repeated, numerous – this is a intentional and focused ambiguous warfare operation against Europe, and Europe must respond.”

Humanitarian Status

The Swiss government has extended its protection status granted to displaced Ukrainians to at least 4 March 2027. Humanitarian status, which allows people to leave the country as well as be employed in Switzerland, is generally limited to a single year but can be extended. “The ruling shows the persistent precarious security situation and persistent Russian attacks across large parts of Ukraine,” said a federal announcement. “Notwithstanding global diplomatic initiatives, a lasting stabilisation that would enable safe return is not expected in the foreseeable future.”
