EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says
The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
