US air traffic controllers are more and more seeking second jobs and reporting ill, as they continue to work unpaid amid the federal closure, the transport chief has announced.

"The controllers are becoming strained," Sean Duffy informed a news outlet on the weekend, as some flights were halted on the Californian coast due to staffing shortages.

Following the federal closure on October 1st, flight controllers, who are deemed critical staff, were told to keep doing their duties uncompensated.

But some have been absent, causing airports to stop or slow their plane traffic, which has added to setbacks due to weather and additional factors.

Over 3,000 US flights were delayed on the weekend, and the secretary said he expects the situation to deteriorate further.

"I am seeing the pressure," he remarked in an interview on Sunday Morning Futures, adding that he had met with several controllers to hear their concerns firsthand.

"They're taking side jobs, they're out there searching, 'Can I work for Uber, am I able to find an alternative of income to cover expenses?'" he continued.

The secretary further mentioned that on the previous day twenty-two notifications at airports indicated flights would be held up due to a shortage of workers - among the peak since the shutdown began.

The US government shutdown reached its 26th day on the weekend, rendering it the second-longest halt in history.

He has repeatedly warned that flight authorities would reduce the quantity of planes in the air if there is a shortage of safety personnel.

In his conversation, he would not answer straightforwardly when asked if it was secure to fly in the United States, and instead issued a personal plea to controllers.

"I need my controllers focused on the airspace, not on the monetary matters at their households," the official stated.

On that day, some planes were grounded at Los Angeles International Airport due to staffing shortages, leading to interruption at the fifth most active airport in the nation and one of the busiest in the world, as well as other flights extending north to the metropolis of Oakland.

The FAA alert was issued at 8:45 AM in the morning on the weekend. Many flights were back on schedule by midday.

Travel at Newark Liberty International Airport, though, were delayed an average of 82 minutes due to staffing shortages, and the FAA indicated DFW, the second most active airport in the country, could experience difficulties from reduced staff later in the day.

The FAA advised passengers in the state to consult carriers about revised flight schedules.

The issue precedes Game 3 of the championship, which is scheduled in Los Angeles on Monday evening, and approximately four weeks prior to the Thanksgiving holiday, one of the busiest periods to fly in the US.

Pressure on US air travel contributed to ending a federal closure in two thousand nineteen. At the time, the halt had reached its fifth week and disrupted flight services, including aviator instruction.

It led several air traffic controllers to stay home on the identical date on January 25, 2019, briefly halting travel at LaGuardia Airport in New York.

On that date, Donald Trump, who at the period was in his first term as president, agreed to sign a temporary funding measure, bringing an end to the federal closure after thirty-five days.
