Adult Swim's Premier Fresh Series of 2025 Earns a Major Extension for Two More Seasons.
During the fall season, Adult Swim saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the network unveiled a fresh animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. At a time often marked by bleakness, this show's sincerity struck a chord and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show follows three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."
Network Praise
In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky style.
"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about following this lovable family navigate their daily lives.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to evolve comedy past its long-running cynical streak. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
Future Seasons
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to experience the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
